Ceramic Spring Collection: Marking Time
It’s been a few years since I first fell in love with a potter’s wheel and part of the joy is the endless learning, exploring and growing. Honing technique and aesthetic judgement to make work that is meaningful and beautiful is not an easy journey, but it is a thrilling one. I’m reading Glen Adamson’s book “Fewer and Better Things” at the moment and it’s reminding me to focus on the pieces that really sing.
Recently, as an antidote to our constant flight towards the ‘next thing’, I’ve been exploring what it takes to anchor myself in the present. The idea of marking time, to celebrate the now and bring my attention inwards. Throwing double curves, exaggerating rims, curling lips, sharpening shoulders, all require my total concentration on the wheel. These small moments of exaggeration and excess are so many invitations to us all to linger in the moment, to feel the form, the texture, and perhaps to pause, feel the weight, the balance, and hold with two hands.
Thanks to all of you who came to the Open Studio last month — it was such a joy to see new faces and familiar ones. So many inspiring and heart-warming conversations. I’m happy to say most of the work below has now been sold and I am exploring ideas for a new collection. Watch this space for my next quiet foray into making work for food and flowers…
