Ceramic: A Place to Be
I began working with clay five years ago, motivated by my passion for the sensory impact of materials and form, and a deeply felt need to reconnect with the intelligence of my hands. Using porcelain and stoneware, I’m exploring vessels that celebrate the everyday gestures of our lives: to elevate and focus attention on our daily rituals of drinking, eating, talking, growing, sharing in the present moment. I’m intrigued by the cross-cultural role of ceramic in human ritual, vessels in clay that mark key moments in our lives: from Korean placenta jars to Japanese tea ceremony, from Grecian cinerary urns to Andean ritual wine cups. I wonder what the idea and practice of ritual means for contemporary societies, and how ceramic vessels might bring meaning and connection to our lives.
