Turn End

A Modernist Dream

The Best of British Modernism

The houses and gardens at Turn End were designed and built by architect Peter Aldington and his wife Margaret in the 1960s. As modern housing, in a traditional village setting, built from wood, concrete block, glass, and local wychert, Turn End has always been celebrated as an outstanding British success amongst the best of European housing design. The Trust continues to welcome visitors from all over the world and inspires young designers, makers, gardeners, and horticulturalists.

“ buildings are made rather than designed, they grow out of the materials and the technology used to make them…”

Peter Aldington

But Turn End is reaching an important milestone and the Trustees are seeking ways to ensure the long term legacy of the house and garden. Along with the Turn End Charitable Trust, I have been working with the Aldingtons to devise a strategic plan that ensures the house and garden remain living, active places to learn and grow.

Living & Learning Legacy

With the Turn End Trust I am developing a Future Plan for the next 25 years that will enable Turn End to build on the foundations of living and learning to create a place that celebrates nature, the domestic, the human scale, and the value of home. At the heart of the legacy will be the mission to nurture the hand-made and the skills needed to sustain the crafts of carpentry, textiles, ceramics, and furniture-making.
